Antonio Conte says the transfer window will not solve Tottenham’s ‘situation’

Tottenham remain linked with the move of Wolves winger Adama Traore, with Antonio Conte reportedly keen to meet his fee and signature this month.

Conte wants to strengthen his options at the club, especially with the lack of options available to him in his team.

Although Traore primarily serves as a winger for his current club at Molino, Conte has plans to turn him into a right-back should his signature be secured.

This is due to the fact that the summer signature Emerson Royal failed to fully convince the Italian president that he could consistently perform this role, while the second option Matt Doherty is not preferred.

But Conte has received a second warning about the decision to take Traore into the role from Danny Mills, who believes there is nothing to show the Spaniard would be more reliable in the role.

Known for his extreme speed and power with Wolverhampton in the Premier League, Traore is a player who instills fear into any defense by simply catching the ball.

However, despite these qualities, Mills highlights the fact that Traore has often been left off the bench this season and expresses concerns about Conte’s interest in a player who has struggled to make an appearance in his squad.

“I haven’t seen enough to make you think he would be trustworthy in this position,” Mills told Football Insider.

“Last season his numbers were poor. Going back two or three seasons, it was all about his end product wasn’t good enough and maybe it wasn’t.

“The season that followed he changed that, his end product was a lot better. Last season he dropped dramatically and it didn’t happen to him.

“He’s on the bench a lot of the time. There’s a reason you’re on the bench, and that’s what you have to look at. Why is he off the bench a week, a week out? If he’s not good enough to join the Wolverhampton team…”

Conte is supposed to focus on the more defensive side of Traore’s wing-back role – a duty he’s not familiar with – and make the Wolves star his number one transfer target.

Mills is aware of Traore’s quality and potential, but remains unconvinced that he would be better at this centre-back than Royal and Doherty.

“Yes, he has potential but he needs to have that consistency before he gets into this Tottenham team,” Mills said.

“Can you count on him defensively? I’m not convinced that you can do that at full-back.”

Wolverhampton coach Bruno Lage recently left the door open for a potential transfer saying “what is the most important thing in football is if it is good for the club and it is good for the player”.

Lage insisted he was “happy” with Traore, though, which means Spurs may have to pile up money to get his man.

But if Conte uses him in a role he’s unfamiliar with, it could backfire dramatically.
