Ashes 2021-22 Fifth Test, Day 1: Australia vs England – LIVE! | sports

Hello everyone, and welcome to our additional coverage of Ash 5th Test Opening Day. Weather permitting, and rarely allowed in this part of Australia, the match kicks off in Hobart at 3pm local time – which is 4am in the UK.

“Here we are preparing for the biggest sporting event that Tasmania has ever seen,” the Minister of State for Leisure and Sports said earlier this week. Indeed, there is plenty to be excited about on Apple Island. It’s the state’s first test match in five years. It is the first ever ash test in Tasmania. It is the first day and night test in Hobart. Pink ball. The pitch is greener than Bob Brown. The sky is moody. There is much to look forward to.

It must be said that the rest of the country has other concerns. Covid is rampant, supply chains are collapsing, the federal government is hesitant, and the national mood is grim. A smiling Novak Djokovic cup is in the news every night. Test cricket match, though, dead rubber, is a welcome distraction from all of that.

The bruised and battered England side are looking to win their first Test in Australia since 2010-11. The fourth test was an absolute storm and visitors will be looking to go better and salvage something from what has been a rough and tumble month. Australia’s home Pink Ball Test record is exceptional – nine Tests, nine wins. Bookmakers consider it an extravagant favourite. For the rest of us, something like our last day in Sydney would be fine.
