Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick’s reaction

Jamie Carragher has reiterated his belief that Cristiano Ronaldo will cause “many problems to solve” at Manchester United.

The Portuguese star, 36, returned to Old Trafford in August after the deadline for a transfer from Italian side Juventus expired.

Statistically, Ronaldo has done well since his return to United – scoring 14 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.

However, the team has declined significantly during that time. United finished second in the Premier League last season but are now seventh in the table.

They are also knocked out of the UEFA Cup and are not likely to win the Champions League, which leaves them fighting for success in the FA Cup.

Many thought Ronaldo’s return would make United a winning machine once again, ending their five-year wait for titles.

“I don’t see it going badly,” club legend and ex-Ronaldo teammate Mikael Silvestre told TalkSPORT in August.

“He is a professional and everything he does is for the benefit of his performance, which means it will be for the benefit of Manchester United.

“He will do everything in his power to win trophies. He came to United to win trophies and I am sure of that. [that will happen]. “

Speaking to the same site, fellow United icon Wes Brown added: “You have to believe we can [win the title this season].

“Look at the deals we’ve done this summer, they’re good deals! You have to put Man United into the title race.”

However, not everyone was convinced of the decision. Several journalists and pundits have questioned United’s decision to re-sign Ronaldo, including Carragher.

“For all the understandable euphoria at Old Trafford with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, his signature causes as many problems as it solves,” said the Liverpool star.

“Ronaldo could be the best Premier League signing from Manchester United.”

And in his latest column in The Telegraph, Carragher raised further questions about United’s thinking behind the move.

“There is nothing about them; neither passion nor passion; every match looks flat; they lack energy and fluidity; the players are clearly not enjoying their football,” he wrote.

Carragher added: “I said from the start that signing Ronaldo might present more problems than it solves, and that proves to be true regardless of what some of his former United teammates might say.

“This team does not have the unity and discipline required for the challenge [Manchester] City, Liverpool and Chelsea.”

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Ronaldo urged his United teammates to improve after a poor start to the season.

“Man United should win the league or finish second or third. I don’t see any other position for Manchester United,” he said. “In my heart, I do not accept that our mentality is less than being in the top three in the Premier League, in my opinion.

“I think to build good things you sometimes have to destroy some things. So why not – a new year, a new life and I hope Manchester is the level the fans want. They deserve it.”
