Man United ‘made a call’ over Simone Inzaghi’s succession to Rangnick

Man United are ‘communicating with Simone Inzaghi’ over the succession of Ralf Rangnick as manager, with the Inter Milan boss starting an in-depth English course because he wants to train abroad.

  • Simone Inzaghi has impressed since joining Inter Milan at the start of the season
  • Inter top Serie A and have reached the knockout stage of the Champions League
  • Italian media reported that Manchester United had contacted Inzaghi
  • United are looking for a permanent coach and Atletico are said to be interested too

Manchester United have made contact with Simone Inzaghi and are facing competition from Atletico Madrid for the Inter Milan coach as he begins to learn English, a report from Italy claims.

Serie A champions Inter made an impressive title defense under new coach Inzaghi and returned to the Champions League knockout stage for the first time since 2012.

This has alerted clubs across Europe to the former Lazio manager’s growing reputation – and the 45-year-old is close to starting an “in-depth English course” because he wants to train at international level, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The report notes that United’s interim president Ralph Rangnick, who will be retained as an advisor by the club once his tenure in charge of the team expires at the end of the election campaign, has named Inzaghi as a candidate for the permanent position.

Atlético Madrid are also said to be eyeing Inzaghi to succeed Diego Simeone, with the defending champions Spain trailing leaders Real Madrid by 16 points in the Argentine’s year 11.

Inzaghi won his first title with Inter by overseeing a 2-1 extra-time win at the 2021 Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday over Juventus, the club they stripped of the Serie A title last season under former coach Antonio Conte.

Former Italy striker Inzaghi joined Inter on a deal until 2023, although the Nerazzurri are understandably keen to extend his contract.

The former youth team coach took charge at Napoli in 2016 and led the club as he spent more than a decade of his run towards the Coppa Italia title in 2019, when he also won the second Italian Super Cup,

Inter are one point ahead of Milan at the top of the table with a game in hand and have lost only one of their last 20 matches.

This included a winning streak of nine that was cut short by a defeat to Real Madrid, ensuring Inter secured second place in their Champions League group.

Liverpool is waiting for them in the round of 16, and the first leg will be held at the San Siro stadium on February 16.
