Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick’s reaction

Manchester United supporters have called for Cristiano Ronaldo to be awarded the captain’s armband after the veteran showed an intense love for the club’s younger players.

In an explosive interview, the Portugal international said the youngsters “don’t accept it if you criticize them” and said he would be “the first person to offer help” whenever anyone needed his advice.

“If you don’t want my help and advice, do your job by looking at yourself. Do your best to help the team,” Ronaldo said in a season in which United face an uphill battle for a fourth-place finish.

A number of team members have come under fire, with results suffering under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a performance not entirely convincing since Ralf Rangnick took over as interim manager.

The striker’s comments affected a number of fans who encouraged Rangnick to give Ronaldo the captaincy ahead of current defending champion Harry Maguire.

Ronaldo didn’t punch any punches in his interview

“The captain’s armband now,” one fan tweeted after the statement, while another said, “Captain Ronaldo passed ASAP, our players need a rude awakening.”

“Why isn’t he the captain?” It was another ruling, while there was also a suggestion that “if we want to be a great team again, you give Ronaldo the captain’s armband and take the pressure off Harry Maguire.”

Maguire has worn the armband since 2020, when former captain Ashley Young left for Inter Milan, and has kept it since the dismissal of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

England’s central defender Maguire launched a call to arms ahead of the FA Cup third round match on Monday evening, before the team qualified for the fourth round with a 1-0 victory.

“This team finished second last year and we have a better and bigger team this year, so we have to show the right attitude,” the captain said.

“We have great players on the team; leaders. I’m tired of repeating myself but it can’t go on like this – we need to go on a proper run, starting on Monday.”

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand Maguire has called for a focus more on being a mainstay at the club than on serving the team as captain, suggesting that David de Gea could be a strong candidate for the captaincy.

The thing you can face it [Maguire criticism] With were there not many leaders in the club – who else would they choose? ”

“David de Gea would have been my choice because of his time there knowing what it takes to win.”

United’s next match will be against Villa for the second time in a week, as they aim to close the gap on the top four in the Premier League.
