Almost all government corona advisers in Poland have resigned in protest. In the cabinet, the influence of vaccine opponents has spread, the experts complained in a letter. Their recommendations were not taken into account.
In Poland, the dispute over the state’s corona policy has led to an open scandal in the government’s medical advisory body. Thirteen of the seventeen members quit the Medical Council in protest against the growing influence of anti-vaccination groups.
The experts justified this in a letter to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki by a “lack of influence” of their recommendations. “At the same time, we have observed that there is a growing tolerance for groups that deny the threat of Covid-19 and the importance of vaccination in the fight against the pandemic.”
“Limited measures taken”
Government officials and other high-ranking employees also denied corona infection risks, according to the letter, which was signed by prominent virologists, epidemiologists and intensive care doctors. Only four Council members did not join.
The government had taken “only very limited action” to counter the rise in cases in the fall, advisers criticized. The firm failed to “address the threat posed by the omicron variant, despite the alarming number of predicted deaths”.
There is no legal basis
The opposition has long accused the national conservative PiS government of avoiding drastic measures in view of the relatively low vaccination rate so as not to alienate vaccination opponents within its own ranks. Several MPs from the right-wing nationalist ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party have repeatedly spoken out against corona vaccinations in the past.
For example, there is still no legal basis for operators of restaurants, hotels and shops to query the vaccination status of their customers. Regulations such as 2G (i.e. access only for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered) or 3G (i.e. also for those who have been tested) are unknown in Poland.
Only 50% of Poles have been vaccinated twice
The resignation of the experts came after the country of 38 million people today exceeded the threshold of 100,000 corona deaths. Currently, 56.4% of the population has been vaccinated at least twice. About 22 percent already have a booster shot.
