Paul Merson expects Aston Villa to thrash Manchester United 3-1 at Villa Park on Saturday night.
Steven Gerrard’s men will have a point to prove after losing 1-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup third round on Monday night.
Danny Ings conceded a controversial equalizer, which was ruled out for offside in the second half in a decision that was heavily criticized by BBC SportCritics during their live coverage of the Cup Championship.
Aston Villa will support the signing of Philippe Coutinho, Barcelona playmaker, and Everton full-back Lucas Digne to support Gerrard’s team before visiting Manchester United.
Manchester United continued to frustrate them in all competitions despite sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and appointing Ralf Rangnick as their interim coach.
The Red Devils have won five of their last eight matches, but the 20-times champions have struggled to get past the corner under their new German coach.
Manchester United were fortunate to advance to the FA Cup fourth round after Villa put in an excellent performance at Old Trafford last week.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Villa will avenge the FA Cup setback and ease their 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Saturday night.
“Manchester United is currently all over the place and I’ve been in touch with this for a long time,” Merson told Sportskeeda.
“I know they’ve won a few games under Ralf Rangnick but they’ve been poor, so I don’t see them beating Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.
“Villa is 14th in the table but I can’t see Manchester United winning – that tells you everything you need to know.
“A good team always beats a group of people, and that’s what Manchester United are at the moment – a group of people.
Look at the last two away games in the Premier League – a late penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo for the win over Norwich City and a draw against Newcastle!
“For the recently concluded FA Cup, Villa did much better in that match despite the loss and I expect them to take Manchester United to zero this time.
“I am worried about Manchester United, I am already and it would be unbelievable if they finished fourth in the top spots. A lot has been said about them, especially about Cristiano Ronaldo, but I still think he still has to start.
“He didn’t play in the FA Cup and they weren’t better. Manchester United don’t create many chances and Ronaldo is one of the best footballers in the world so they need him on the pitch to score goals.
“For Marcus Rashford, people seem to forget that he is still young because he played football so much. Inconsistency is always an issue with youth, so I will give him more time to prove his worth.”
Aston Villa have lost four of their last five games in all competitions, including losses to Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
However, Gerrard has won all of his matches against the lesser teams in the Premier League except for the surprise defeat by Brentford.
Manchester United remain unconvinced under Rangnick, while Villa have a renewed sense of ambition and optimism since Gerrard took over at Villa Park.
The Birmingham side will be hoping to finish the race in the top half of the table after the additions of Coutinho and Digne – and a win over Manchester United would be the perfect factor to build momentum.
Saturday night’s clash at Villa Park is a tough task for Manchester United and it’s hard to see Gerrard the mastermind to beat enemy number one.
