Woman reveals travel hack for packing with airplane pillow: ‘I needed this’

A woman has revealed how she used her airplane pillow as a carry-on bag on the plane, especially if she was on a budget, and viewers are praising the idea.

In a TikTok video posted on Jan. 8, @anayotothe noted how she’s seen people on the apron put items in their plane pillows when traveling on Spirit and Frontier Airlines.

“I’m trying the Spirit and Frontier pillow hack because I’m trying not to pay $60 for a carry-on bag,” reads the caption above the video.

“A few weeks ago, I saw a track hack on TikTok for the budget airlines that don’t let you carry a bag,” the caption continues. “Instead, you can use a travel pillow for extra storage.”

She explained that she had a U-shaped travel pillow with a zipper. So she took out all the stuffing.

The TikTok user then took out another bag, which contained some of her clothes, and placed it on her pillow.

“These are the clothes that wouldn’t fit in my backpack,” the caption reads. “I’m going to Vegas so your girl needs options!

“These are my mesh tops and dresses, so they’re lightweight.”

Everything would fit in the pillow, except for one shirt. She only took this pillow and a backpack on the plane.

The video has been viewed more than 988,000 times to date, with some viewers commenting in the comments how much they loved this travel hack.

“Yes, I’ll try this. I don’t pay more for luggage than the flight costs,” one wrote.

“Yessss bb thanks!!”, reads another comment. “My husband and I are going on a trip soon and he is the only one with hand luggage! I needed this!!!”

Viewers also shared their own travel ideas, one of which said, “Next time, put on a free personal item, then buy a chevron bag and put it under a jacket (looks like you’re pregnant). I’ll do it all time.”

However, some TikTok users found using a travel pillow as a bag to be too much of a hassle.

“Isn’t it just easier to switch airlines? Is it that much cheaper?” one wrote.

“This is too much,” claimed another viewer. “Just pay the money and fly on delta or JetBlue.”

In a follow-up video post on Jan. 12, @anayotothe confirmed that she made her flight with the backpack and pillow, without having to pay extra.

She also responded to some comments telling her that her packing routine was “too much work” and that she just had to “pay for a more expensive flight.”

The TikTok user explained that it took her “five minutes” to get the Walgreens travel pillow and pack her things. She also noted that she lives not far from Las Vegas, so she didn’t want to pay for a more expensive flight.

“I live near the bay,” she said. “I would go to Vegas. It was an hour flight. There was no reason why me or all of you, if you live so close to a place, should pay $300 dollars for a flight when you can take one of the low cost airlines.

As stated on its website, Spirit Airlines charges to “keep prices low” for carry-on and checked baggage. Passengers are allowed one personal item, such as a small bag or wallet, that “fits all the way into the smaller size box” included with each ticket. Cabin baggage prices may vary based on weight.

Like Spirit, Frontier Airlines offers only one free personal item per ticket, as explained on the airline’s website. The price of a carry-on bag also varies based on its weight.
